GOAT

Tom Brady, Michael Jordan (not LeBron), Lewis Hamilton, Bach, PT Barnum, Vermeer
What do these people have in common?

people want to be great - i mean who would have the goal of I want to be terrible/crummy
people talk about greatness
people compare greatness
people judge greatness
we are told what greatness is
we are told who is great

and this isn’t new

Mark 10:35-45
realization that there is nothing new under the sun
for thousands of years people have been pursuing and evaluating greatness

there is nothing wrong with wanting to be great
the question is how do you get there?
what does it cost you?
how long does it last?
was it real or contrived?

these disciples didn’t understand greatness yet, there were going to learn and they were going to see it - and then they were going to follow it

there is a worldly definition that involves standing on top of the mountain, being regarded as the highest, having everyone look at you, having everyone beneath you

there is a spiritual reality, exemplified by Jesus of true greatness

to be great is to be a servant
to be at the bottom, to choose to let people stand on you, to be treaded upon or to hold others up

someone was truly great - the greatest - the servant who gave His life
there are some great people out there

and they were Great: Acts 12:1-2, Revelation 1:1-2

TAKE SOME HOME:
don’t compare yourself to others
but do ask - could you be greater?
could you be lower so that you can be higher?
that’s not a bad pursuit
